Tanzania Currency

The official currency of Tanzania is the Tanzanian Shilling (TZS). It is denoted by the symbol “TSh” or “TZS” and is subdivided into 100 cents. The currency is issued and regulated by the Bank of Tanzania, which is the country’s central bank.

While the Tanzanian Shilling is the official currency, it is worth noting that US dollars (USD) are widely accepted in many tourist areas, especially for larger transactions such as hotel bills and safari packages. However, it is recommended to have some Tanzanian Shillings in cash for smaller expenses and when visiting local markets, restaurants, or smaller establishments where USD might not be accepted.

It’s essential to keep in mind that when traveling to Tanzania, it is advisable to have a combination of Tanzanian Shillings and US dollars to cater to different situations and locations.

Banknotes in circulation come in denominations of 500, 1,000, 2,000, 5,000, and 10,000 Tanzanian Shillings. The coins commonly used are in denominations of 50, 100, 200, and 500 shillings, although smaller denominations like 10 and 20 shillings are also in circulation but less commonly used.

It is advisable to exchange foreign currency at authorized exchange bureaus or banks to ensure fair rates and avoid counterfeit currency. Major credit cards are accepted in some hotels, lodges, and larger establishments in major cities, but it is always wise to carry some cash for transactions in more remote or rural areas.

Most stores, restaurants, and hotels accept international credit cards (particularly Visa, MasterCard, and American Express). Because many smaller establishments do not have EFTPOS, it is often preferable to carry cash for incidentals. In most places, ATMs that take both Visa and MasterCard are available. ATMs are not available in small towns or on safari.
